Year of the Horse — No More Horse, Horse, Tiger, Tiger (by Jimmy Hsiao)

Every year I go to our offices in Taiwan and China to celebrate Chinese New Year with my colleagues. The Chinese calendar has a 12-year cycle where each year corresponds to an animal in the Chinese zodiac; 2014 is the year of horse.

Horse (馬) is pronounced as “Ma” in Chinese. There is a celebrity “Ma” in each of the countries that Logic has an office. Yo-Yo Ma is a Grammy Award winning cellist in the U.S. He is a role model for my children who love classical music. Ying-Jeou Ma is the current president of Taiwan. Twice-elected President Ma and President Obama both went to Harvard for graduate school. Jack Ma is the founder of Alibaba Group, the eCommerce giant in China. Alibaba owns the consumer portal business Taobao (similar to eBay and Amazon), a B2B portal business, and AliPay (similar to PayPal). In 2012, two of Alibaba’s portals earned revenues of $170B, more than Amazon and eBaby combined. In fact, Alibaba is currently the most valuable part of Yahoo, which holds a 24% ownership. Mr. Ma (Mr. Horse) is a common conversational topic for me in all three countries.

Not only do the Chinese often talk about Ma (horses) in our conversation because of celebrity Ma, but also we really use Ma a lot in our daily conversation. Horse is injected in most conversations because of its multiple implied meanings. Let me offer you a quick lesson in conversational Chinese before I move forward.

In Healthcare, it’s Seek to Understand, then to Solve (by Richard Walker)

Often times during an introductory conversation with a hospital administrator, I am asked, “What software does Logic Solutions offer?” My response starts out simply stating that we actually don’t have a software product to offer them. The puzzled look I get in return isn’t uncommon, and is usually followed by an awkward moment of hesitation, confusion, or perhaps an audible sigh. What we do have, I explain, is a process, and the first step is for me to understand what unique challenges exist for that administrator and their environment. You see, our job is to help solve a problem — but first we need to understand what that problem is.

David Shaywitz wrote in a recent Forbes article the importance of emphasizing customer discovery and development in creating solutions that place far more emphasis on customer need. In the article, Healthcare Entrepreneurs Learn Important Lesson From The Valley: Your Solution Is Not My Problem, Shaywitz says, “Many ideas never go anywhere; many high-potential startups fail because their solution, while elegant, can’t be matched to a problem somebody wants to solve.” (1) In other words, many companies pitch their solutions without a solid understanding of the challenge at hand. He believes digital health entrepreneurs seem “especially susceptible” to offering a technology solution without considering whether it solves a problem for which a customer is willing to pay.

Showcase Sales Update

As programming continues to bring the world closer together, virtually everything around us is impacted – healthcare, automotive, agriculture, learning, shopping, communicating, you name it. At Logic Solutions, coding and programming are our passion. We know firsthand how programming can solve a problem, bring people together, and in fact change the world. This is why we strive to hire top talent with fire in their bellies, to help us create cutting edge solutions for our customers. Showcase Sales, Logic Solution’s mobile sales app for Android and the iPad, had a busy January. Users can now set up custom pricing tiers, making promotional, volume, and discount selling even easier.

Showcase’s shiny new website (www.showcasecloud.com) is up and running, introducing new base packages: Showcase Suite (with total functionality); Showcase Sales (with Catalog, Order, and Customer Management); and Showcase Library (with our innovative sales and marketing document management system). To make things simple, the site features an instant price calculator where customers can easily determine average monthly cost per user and total monthly cost for each package.

Incidentally, we built the new Showcase website on WordPress, making it another great example of our expertise on this platform.

Featured Client: OrthoFi

OrthoFi-Logo-Logic-Solutions-ClientOrthoFi, software company based in Colorado, specializes in solutions for orthodontists. When OrthoFi approached Logic Solutions to help test their latest web-based application, their application was already in beta testing and changes were being made daily by a dedicated team of programmers. Because of a tight deadline and constant updates, the OrthoFi programming team didn’t have the time or resources to run new code or regression tests.

Enter Logic Solutions, who brought in a team to learn the application and test plan in order to provide daily test reports to the OrthoFi team in Denver. Logic Solutions pulls the new code, runs its through test plans, returns a final report to OrthoFi and logs any issues that might arise.

“Logic Solutions was able to learn our system, our complicated test plan and add value very quickly,” Nathan Gudritz (OrthoFi’s Chief Technology Officer) said.

When it comes to working with our clients, providing value is our number one priority. We’re proud to work with companies like OrthoFi.

Employee Spotlight: Chak Lai

ChakChak Lai is a program lead at Logic Solutions working primarily with Wellmed Medical Management. Chak is talented and experienced, two things we love at Logic. He holds a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota and a master’s degree in computer science from Ohio State University (yes, Logic Solutions does practice equal opportunity employment by hiring the occasional Buckeye despite the fact that we are headquartered in Ann Arbor).
Chak has been in technical sales and software professional services over the course of impressive career. Chak’s experience in the software professional services industry covers the entire process of software development. Thus, Chak’s versatility and understanding of the development process is crucial now that he is in a management role. His prior employers include the largest robotics company in the world (Fanuc Robotics) and the largest software company in the world: Microsoft. Now that he is with Logic Solutions, Chak brings big company ambitions and ideas to a small shop, where he can provide detailed attention to clients.

If he’s not at home in Michigan or at Wellmed in San Antonio, you might find Chak at The Outer Banks in North Carolina (his favorite vacation spot) with his wife. Though he might not look like it, Chak loves opera. “The musical form, not the browser,” he says. To date, Chak considers his biggest achievement as living the American Dream everyday.

The Logic Solutions team strives to provide you with relevant and interesting information in our monthly newsletter. If you have feedback or suggestions, please email us at marketing@logicsolutions.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
